Haverhill Lesson Program

At Haverhill, we pride ourselves on having safe, sound of mind and body, happy horses! Typically, horses get one to two days off a week, and they never go more than an hour and a half a day (most of the time they go for a half hour to an hour, 5-6 days a week). This keeps our horses happy and healthy!

The lesson program at Haverhill Equestrian was established in 2006. Since then, Carol Straus and the trainers have carefully crafted a safe environment and teaching practices to promote the teaching of effective, safe riders who know the importance of proper horsemanship.

The staff at Haverhill has chosen their string of school horses based on quality and temperment. Learn more about each of our horses below!

OUT OF BOUNDS

Parker is a solid chestnut gelding, lovingly referred to as “Sweet Potato.” He’s a blast to jump and a wonderful show partner for his riders.

GRENDEL McVAI

Grendel is a show pony extraordinaire! He is half connemara and has done everything from pre-short, pleasure, right on up to the "A" shows. He is lovingly owned by the Zube family and we are so grateful that he is being shared with our lesson program.

DUM LUCK

aka Lucky is Jessica’s favorite pony! He is fat and comfortable, and if you get him going, he’ll jump the big jumps and even do a lead change if the planets align!

THANK GOD IT’S FREDDY

Freddy is a large pony and a barn favorite! He is a master at teaching the kids how to canter and can often be seen at the IEA and IHSA shows!

JOKES ON YOU

Jester is Carol’s favorite lesson pony!  Jester does beginner through advanced lessons, because he is just that perfect! He got his name because he was born on April Fool’s Day!

CARBON COPY

Hudson has turned into a jack of all trades! He can do an advanced beginner lesson all the way to showing in the hunters and the jumpers!

FRENCH CURRENT

Swayzee has all of the personality. He is mostly and intermediate to advanced school horse and also does the IEA and IHSA program. He can often be spotted by his tell tale tongue out!

RELIANT K

Eli is Carol's dressage horse. He is by Popeye K and has a fantastic jump! He is very lazy but super fun!

OVERCAST

Bear is an 11 year old OTTB who loves to jump! He lopes around the ring with all riders and is an IEA superstar. In his spare time he enjoys rolling in the mud, trying new cookies, and hacking around the farm.

Tucker

Tucker was Jessica’s horse, and was a barn favorite. He was very kind, careful, and patient. He was an OTTB that Jessica got straight from the track and traveled with her while she was in college. His pleasant demeanor and easy rideability made him a barn favorite. This is Jessica and Tucker at the CHSA Classic in 2012.

KIP

Kipling was Carol’s sweet, and prankster, appendix gelding. He was notorious for being able to escape his stall and generally playing jokes on his people. Here, he is pictured at Coventry showing with Jessica when he was around 9 years old.
